Press & Radio

Modern rock music at its very best. A warped mix of country, rock and blues. Conil takes the blues on a 21st century journey. This record is anything but predictable. One of the best releases of the year.
— Blues Matters Magazine
A strange brew indeed. Gritty, urban blues, full of tales of hard life. Pray he lives long enough to record a second album.

About

Songs from the edge of somewhere.

You don’t know if you’re walking into a protest, a party, or a funeral.

Bluesy, soulful rock’n’roll. Haunted, deep and raw. The kind of raw you can’t fake.

“You don’t sound like anyone else,” said Danny Thompson – legendary bassist for Nick Drake and John Martyn.

Tchad Blake, sonic architect for Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, described Strange Part of the Country as “an extraordinary album. I still listen to it.”

Fleetwood Mac’s Peter Green was also a fan, making a rare visit to record with Conil in his studio.

Conil’s music has drawn praise from artists and producers known for recognising the real thing: John Leckie (Radiohead, The Stone Roses), Pino Palladino (The Who, D’Angelo), and Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Robert Plant).

Upon release, Strange Part of the Country made quiet but lasting waves: Q Magazine ★★★★ “Q Recommends”; Blues Matters cover feature hailing him as “one of the most original artists out there”; and the single Years Between reached number three on the U.S. Alternative Radio Chart.

Raised in England on the Rolling Stones, the Velvet Underground, and Tom Waits, Conil forged a sound shaped by experience and restless searching. His travels through Asia and Africa — from the Himalayas to Kilimanjaro — continue to echo in his music.

He is now completing his long-awaited second album with Danny Thompson, Tchad Blake and more.
